Science Hill appoints football coach
Tuesday, Jan 09, 2007 - 03:34 PM
Science Hill High School now has a new football coach, the athletic director announced Tuesday.
B. Scott Smith, of Franklin, Tenn., has been chosen to fill the top spot, according to Athletic Director Keith Turner. Smith beat out four other candidates including the head coach at Morristown-West High School.
Smith received his Master's of Education degree from Tennessee State University in Nashville. He has been the head football coach at Independence High School since May 2004.
He written 12 football-based books.
In November, Science Hill High School Principal Dave Chupa announced that varsity head football coach John Bowles had been relieved of his duties as coach.
Chupa read a short statement to News Channel 11 that Bowles had the option to remain at the school as a teacher. Bowles currently remains a teacher at the school and has given no indication he'll leave any time soon, Chupa said.
Chupa says the decision was based on the team's record.
Assistant football coach Paul Overbay took over head coaching duties on an interim basis while the school conducted the search for a new head coach.
